Queen Anne and Yarrow
Chainstitch Embroidery on Fresh Water Textile Linen
18” x 18”

While working on another project I was focusing intensely on the shapes of both Queen Anne’s Lace and Yarrow, which are similar in a lot of ways. (I thought they were both part of the carrot family but they are not, in fact!) I have been pondering our relationship to “invasive” and “native” plants, and I am struck by the drastic differences in the ways we treat these two categories. There are so many questions that arise when digging deeper into this topic, and I’m currently swirling about it all. Queen Anne’s Lace is considered invasive with all the negative connotations that implies, while Yarrow is heralded as native with many health benefits. I’ve tried to portray this in my color choice for these two plants as an invitation to examine this topic further.

This is meant to be part of an ongoing series in which I release a small chainstitched wall hanging every Monday. They are sketches of ideas, meditations on concepts, beginnings of paths. Some will turn into bigger pieces, maybe even series, but this is a platform for me to experiment with new ideas.

Also how dreamy is this Fresh Water Textile Linen??

Thanks y’all. :)
