Chainstitch Embroidery on Hand Dyed Linen
25”x19” framed
Clearly inspired by the pandemic, this piece allowed me to focus on the cellular level of growth. I stitched with this in mind, letting the natural movement of my hands and the machine inform which direction I stitched. I let the shapes bloom and grow as if they were alive and blooming themselves.
In the beginning I didn’t intend for it to look like a map, I suppose in addition to thinking a lot about the spread of disease, I’ve also been thinking a lot about the spread of people. More specifically, the colonization of the United States and how similar it has been to the spread of disease.
This piece was stitched with multiple layers to create the color fades, and then turned over and stitched from back to front to create the circular outlines.
