Ghost Pipes study (purple)
Ghost Pipes study (purple)
Gouache on watercolor paper

Ghost Pipes, found in the healthy woods of Northern Michigan among other places, will forever be my muse. Rising from the detritus, pushing through the weight of decay, reaching for the sun though they need it not, standing tall in a world seemingly made for someone else, they are my heroes. If you are unfamiliar with these magical creatures I implore you to research them further. They feel powerfully feminine to me, and I love their relationship to the darkness, to the unknown, to the veiled side. In my representations of them I try desperately to capture their spirits: persistent and fragile, powerful and mysterious, unknowable and generous, bright white dark and holy, holy, holy.
Created during my residency at the Glen Arbor Arts Center.
