No matter the form my art takes, I am wholly captivated by the natural world. Landscapes and the flora and fauna existing within them are my endless subjects. I enjoy letting my imagination run in this context, sometimes exploring the supernatural elements just beyond our grasp. These days I have been working in the linocut printmaking, watercolor, and chainstitching forms, using mostly black and white to showcase fine details and color to express an ethereal quality. My goal as an artist is to take the human into worlds they may not otherwise encounter, and to show them what they may not see themselves in these worlds. In this way I hope to strengthen the relationship between humans and nature, and in so doing, inspire conservation and stewardship.
BIO
Dana Falconberry is an artist and musician living in Texas and Michigan. She grew up dancing classical ballet and modern dance in Dearborn, MI before attending Hendrix College in Arkansas. In college she studied songwriting, which prompted her move to Austin in 2005. Touring, recording, and leading a band for over a decade, her last album From The Forest Came The Fire was released with a National Park Tour in 2016. Deciding to transition out of the music industry and into the visual art realm, she worked for 6 years as a lead stitcher/designer at Fort Lonesome, a custom chainstitch embroidery company based in Austin. She is now focusing on her own art, including a mixture of paint and chainstitching, which she calls “paintstitches”. Her work draws on the natural world, often including supernatural elements playing with the concepts of time and the effects of humankind on natural landscapes. She currently lives near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Northern Michigan.
Projects
Monotropa Uniflora
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2022, I dove deep for consolation and processing into my muse, the Ghost Pipe. What resulted was an exhibition at Cedar North in Cedar, MI of more than 30 original pieces.
National Park Tour
For the release of my last full-length album, I chose to forego the traditional club and bar tour circuit and opted instead for the gorgeous natural venues of our country. We performed in eight Parks including Guadalupe Mountains, White Sands, Saguaro, Sequoia, Crater Lake, Badlands, Sleeping Bear, and Isle Royale.
Big Bend Conservation Alliance
I worked closely with the BBCA to create a design that incorporated the many aspects of the Big Bend region that they aim to protect including water, dark skies, flora and fauna, among others. This design was then used to form multiple tiers of giving including a t-shirt, a handmade linocut print, and a full color painting.
